GLASGOW GREEN TO HOST THE 70TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE WORLD PIPE BAND CHAMPIONSHIPS
100 days to go till the Worlds
Posted Thursday 8 May 2014
Organisers of this year’s World Pipe Band Championships are preparing for a record-breaking year as they count down 100 days to go until the event is staged in Glasgow.
The Worlds, as it is affectionately known, returns to Glasgow Green on Saturday 16th August. Grade 1 qualifiers will be staged on the Green the previous day.
Last year a record 226 bands and more than 8000 pipers from all over the world flocked to the city for what is always the biggest event in the piping calendar. Today (Thursday) marks 100 days to go until the 2014 competition and organisers have revealed The Worlds is on track for another bumper year in the city.
Ian Embelton, Chief Executive of the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association (RSPBA), said: “We have 157 bands from all over the world signed up so far and, with 100 days still to go, we could well be in for a record-breaking year.
“We’re delighted that several bands from overseas will be joining us for the first time. Among them are a band from California called ‘House of Scotland’, another named ‘Scotch Watch’ from Switzerland. They will of course be given a very warm welcome at Glasgow Green.
The Worlds has long been the biggest event on the piping calendar and the countdown is now on for what will be a very special year for the competition.”
The 25,000 who attend the annual event make The Worlds the biggest competition in any piping fan’s calendar and attracts bands and supporters from as far afield as Zimbabwe, Mexico and Brazil. The Grade 1 bands will be trying to clinch the crown from Field Marshal Montgomery Pipe Band from Belfast, who have won the last three years in a row.
The event is a great family day out with children aged 5 and under gaining free entry, a special children’s zone, Highland Dancing, and Highland Games. An International Street of Food area will be introduced, offering a wide variety of different dishes from around the world.
Meanwhile, the popular Flavour of Scotland area is being given a boost and will be made bigger than ever, offering the very best in Scottish food and drink. The traditional Scots theme continues at the Worlds crafts and traders area where there will be over 30 stalls promoting all things Scottish.
